Consumer Debt

Individuals with limited English proficiency are especially vulnerable to unfair practices in English-only credit transactions. They are susceptible to misrepresentation, usury interest rates, and hidden terms. Often, a migrant farmworker family’s most valuable asset, their vehicle, which is needed for transportation to work in fields, is acquired with unfair credit practices that zap all available income, trap them into a binding disadvantageous credit arrangement, and subject them to unfair debt collection practices.  Migrant Legal Aid assists families in these situations to protect their ability to earn income as they migrant across Michigan and the country.
